Practice Makes Perfect? The Key to Becoming an Exceptional Communicator.

Carl Alleyne - Preactice Makes Perfect?

The Key to Becoming an Exceptional Communicator.

When the average person hears the word "practice", they might think of the idea of repeating or rehearsing an activity or skill in order to improve it.

When coaches struggling to speak confidently on camera hear the word "practice", they think of practicing their speech in front of the camera to become more confident and comfortable.

Coaches struggling to speak confidently on camera may think of practice as an opportunity to hone their communication skills and become an exceptional communicator. Practicing their communication skills in front of a camera can help them build confidence, strengthen their voice, and become more aware of their body language. With practice, they can develop the skills needed to become an exceptional communicator.

However, they may also think of long hours spent preparing; the cost of hiring a coach; and the fear of making mistakes in front of the camera and the people.

Here are my thoughts on the concept of practice as it applies to communication and public speaking, particularly if you are determined to improve your communication abilities and become an exceptional communicator.

  • Don’t Be Overly Scripted: It’s important to have a structure to your message, but try to avoid sounding too robotic and scripted. Speak naturally and authentically to create a connection with the audience.

  • Don’t Ramble: Keep your message focused and on point. Straying off topic will confuse your audience and leave them feeling lost.

  • Don’t Be Afraid to Pause: Pausing is an important tool for effective communication. It gives your audience time to process what you’ve said and allows you to gauge their response.

  • Don’t Forget to Smile and Relax: Smiling is a great way to show your audience that you’re confident and comfortable with the material. Relaxing your body and facial expression can also help you come across as a credible source.

  • Don’t Skip the Practice: Practice DOES NOT make perfect, but permanent. Take the time to practice your delivery in front of a mirror or record yourself and play the recording back. This will help you gain confidence and clarity in your message before you take it on camera for the public.
