Hello fellow coaches! I know first hand how daunting it can feel to speak confidently on camera. In this article, I am going to share my personal journey of conquering this fear and provide you with practical tips that helped me along the way. Trust me, if I can do it, so can you!
Being in the entertainment industry for over 33 years, performing on stage, being in front of the camera for tv shows, coaching celebrities, and even coaching other coaches who coached other celebrities, you would think that someone like me has this whole confidence on camera thing down pat and perfect right? Nope, I still don’t. It goes back to my past.
As a youth, I kind of just threw myself into the spotlight. I saw other artists do it, and I wanted to do the same. Therefore my mind was just focused on getting to the next level of being successful. I was a practitioner of presenting. However, my mistake was this.. not taking time to process what I was doing, enjoying it, and breaking it down for myself. I was young and didn’t appreciate the power in paying attention to the process. Fast forward to today, I now can appreciate it. And through this ability, I have discovered a path to mastery that I stay on so I can continually punch fear in the face when it rears it’s ugly head..
I would like to share with you some steps that work well for me.
Step 1: Understanding My Fear:
The first step towards overcoming any fear is to observe it, and truly understand it. I had to look and confront my own anxieties about making mistakes, being judged, and appearing inauthentic. Once I identified these sources, I could start developing strategies to address and counteract them.
Step 2: Embracing Authenticity:
One of the biggest challenges for me was the pressure to appear perfect on camera. However, I soon realized that my audience connected more with my genuine, imperfect self. Embrace your unique personality, speak from the heart, and watch as your authenticity establishes trust and credibility.
Step 3: The Power of Preparation:
Feeling confident on camera requires thorough preparation. I learned to script or outline my content, ensuring clear structure and key points to cover. Additionally, I gathered any necessary visual aids or materials to support my message (I do consider myself a visual aid as well..lol) . The more prepared I felt, the more confident I became.
Step 4: Practice Makes Progress:
Speaking on camera is a skill that improves with practice. I started by recording short videos to familiarize myself with the process. Gradually, I challenged myself with longer and more complex content. By watching, celebrating, and critiquing my own recordings, I pinpointed areas for improvement and steadily built my confidence.
Step 5: Harnessing the Power of Visualization:
I discovered the power of visualization. Taking a few moments to envision myself speaking confidently, engaging my audience, and successfully conveying my message truly boosted my confidence. It's amazing how powerful our minds can be in shaping our reality.
Step 6: Seeking Support and Feedback:
I realized I didn't have to face this challenge alone. Seeking support from colleagues, friends, and family was incredibly helpful. Their honest feedback and constructive criticism helped me refine my skills and further boost my confidence. Remember, reaching out for help is a sign of strength.
Conclusion:
